Oakland: Local rapper in critical condition after Saturday shooting

OAKLAND — A rapper shot several times in East Oakland Saturday night by someone who told him to stop filming a video remained in critical condition Monday.

Police confirmed that Amir Rashad, 33, who performs under the name Kafani, was the man shot at about 11:36 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Seminary Avenue and Foothill Boulevard.

Police said Rashad was part of a group filming a rap video when a man approached and told them they shouldn’t be filming there. As they were in the process of leaving the man shot Rashad numerous times, authorities said.

Rashad’s friends drove him to a hospital, where he underwent surgery.

Rashad is based in Oakland, and is the founder of the group Babyface Assassins, according to his official website. In November 2011, police said Rashad was at the scene of a West Oakland shooting in which eight people were shot, including 23-month-old Hiram Lawrence Jr., who later died. A van belonging to the rapper was riddled with gunshots, police said at the time.

The day of that shooting, the toddler’s father, producer Hiram Lawrence Jr., was shooting a music video with two fellow rappers that disrespected a gang from the Acorn public housing project, according to court testimony in April. The testimony was given in a preliminary hearing for Fredrick Coleman, who is one of three people accused of firing at least 40 bullets into the group of people on Nov. 28, 2011.

MESSY MARV SPEAKS OUT ON THE ROBBERY

http://www.vladtv.com/ – VladTV managed to lock in an exclusive interview with the Bay Area’s Messy Marv, to get him to open up on the unfortunate violent robbery that he had to suffer through in Reno. Earlier this month a bloody image was posted on various social networking and media sites of Marv laid out on a hotel room floor bleeding badly from his mouth. The white t-shirt he was wearing had large blood stains on it from the robbery in which he was assaulted and held up at gunpoint.

Marv spoke exclusively to VladTV over the phone to detail the events that took place in full from his perspective and shed light on the backstory behind the grisly video. While he stated during the interview that he had a concussion, he is certainly lucky to be alive after that brutal attack.

Hear what Messy Marv had to say about the armed robbery above.

kafani in critical condition several media aources confirm

KAFANI1Kafani was on his way to shoot a music video to his Philthy Rich diss song “Philthy You a Verse Lick”. On Seminary Avenue and Foothill Boulevard at about 11:35 pm last night, Kafani was shot 5 times and is now in critical condition at an Oakland Hospital. Philthy started the beef with previous diss song featuring Kurt Diggler ”Swear To God” and twitter posts, check out the back round story here.  DB Tha General, Kafani, and Messy Marv made diss verses back and you can here the montage of verses in a previous article here.

The beef is real and Bay Area rappers aren’t messing around with this beef on some mainstream Kendrick Lamar beef hype.  They are bringing it to the streets and now there is some blood on people’s hands over the escalating beef.  The beef was sparking some hot verses and will be interesting to see if the beef will continue to be on a violence level or if it will stop here.

Hopefully Kafani can make it through this one, but he is not looking good.  He’s already gone through 2 surgeries and is holding on by a thread.  Philthy’s twitter posts regarding DB Tha General show that he got love for him but he better watch out too because he claims he’s never been shot at or jacked at the beginning off his diss verse towards Philthy.

This story is breaking and we’ll update with details when available.

Friends of rapper Kafani (@Kifani) are currently reporting that the rapper has been shot.

“A person is in critical condition after being shot in Oakland late Saturday night, police said. Officers responded to a report of a shooting in the area of Seminary Avenue and Foothill Boulevard at about 11:35 p.m., Officer J. Moore said.

When cops arrived, they found a person suffering from at least one gunshot wound, Moore said. The victim was transported to a hospital and is in critical condition, according to Moore. No suspect information was immediately available and no arrests have been made, he said.”

Rapper Kevin “Flipside” White shot dead.

Around 7:30pm this past Monday evening, rapper Kevin “Flipside” White was shot dead in what is believed to be an unprovoked attack during a gang conflict at Watts’ Nickerson Gardens and Jordan Downs housing projects.

Flipside was a founding member of Watts’ first major label hip hop act, O.F.T.B. (Operation From The Bottom). The trio –Flipside, Low MB, and DJ Bus Stop– released Straight Up Watts on the Atlantic-backed Big Beat Records in 1992. Under the guidance of DJ Quik and 2nd II None’s manager “Greedy” Greg, the group was soon picked up by Death Row Records. O.F.T.B. appeared on the platinum selling, Suge Knight produced soundtrack for Above The Rim, as well as the soundtrack for Murder Was The Case.

Throughout his 20-year career, Flipside worked to give voices to those in his neighborhood and put those messages on albums heard by the masses. White’s friend and longtime Death Row labelmate Big Wy, of The Relativez and Young Soldierz, says O.F.T.B.’s accounts of South Central street-life were trailblazing in the way they accurately depicted the urban reality to broad audiences.

“[O.F.T.B.] was one of the first groups out of L.A. that was on [TV channel] The Box with a hot record,” Wy says.

White was reduced to compilation work while O.F.T.B.’s untitled sophomore album collected dust, until Death Row superstar Tupac Shakur ushered him further into the spotlight. On the 1996 hit “To Live In Die In L.A,” Tupac mentions O.F.T.B. in the third verse, saying “Got them Watts niggas with me, O.F.T.B./They got some hash, took the stash, left the rest for me.”

Shakur worked with the trio on the bootlegged track “Worldwide (Time After Time)” and “Better Dayz.” The latter song was released six years after ‘Pac’s own passing on the multi-platinum double-album of the same name, but with Flip and Low’s vocals replaced by Ron Isley.

“People don’t know that that was originally an O.F.T.B. record, featuring Tupac,” Wy says of “Better Dayz.” Flipside and Wy also helped guide Death Row through Suge Knight’s lengthy incarceration, traveling to New York and the Baja on business and enjoying the fruits of the label’s success, even though they were among the Death Row’s lesser-known acts.

In 1997, O.F.T.B. appeared on the #1 debuting Gridlock’d soundtrack. (Shakur starred in the film.” He was also on the double-platinum Gang Related soundtrack later that year. Gridlock’d‘s “Body & Soul” became the trio’s second video single, following the DJ Quik-produced “Crack ‘Em.”

The mother of Tupac Shakur has filed a lawsuit seeking $1.1million in unpaid royalties from an album released after the rapper’s death

The mother of Tupac Shakur has filed a lawsuit seeking $1.1million in unpaid royalties from an album released after the rapper’s death.

Afeni Shakur, 66, filed the lawsuit against Entertainment One claiming breach of contract for failure to pay royalties on the album Beginnings: The Lost Tapes released in June 2007.

Entertainment One in July bought the rights to Tupac’s music that was previously owned by Death Row Records, according to the lawsuit.

Afeni is co-administrator of her son’s estate and also demanded in her lawsuit that Entertainment One turn over master recordings of all of her son’s unreleased music, according to a report on Wednesday in TMZ.

Telephone calls to Entertainment One were not returned.

The Lost Tapes contained some of the first hip hop songs that Tupac recorded in 1988.

The album featured 10 songs with Tupac’s early crew and prompted Tupac’s joining of the Digital Underground tour as a roadie.

Tupac was shot multiple times in a drive-by shooting on September 7, 1996 while driving in Las Vegas after watching a Mike Tyson boxing match.

The rapper was rushed to a hospital and died six days later.

Afeni and Tupac’s father Billy Garland were active members in the late 1960s and early 1970s of the Black Panther Party in New York City.

Tupac was born a month after Afeni was acquitted of more than 150 charges of conspiring against the US government and New York landmarks in the Panther 21 court case.

Tupac had one of the highest selling hip hop albums of all time with his 2006 double-disc All Eyez on Me and remains a hip hop icon with album sales reaching more than 75 million to date.

The show won’t go on at the Lancaster County Convention Center this weekend for Rapper DMX

Image. The well-known artist is apparently just as well-known for his rap sheet.

Promoter Larry Bently planned to bring DMX to the Lancaster County Convention Center this weekend. He says when he went to pay his deposit to secure the venue they pulled the plug.

“They said that it was too late, it was too close,” said Larry Bently a promoter with Loud Nation Wildlife. Bently said he doesn’t believe that is the only reason. “As we were going down there the last couple of weeks they said that Mayor Rick Gray was calling in the last couple of weeks hounding them about the artist that we were bringing, and pretty much told them to take a look at it. They looked at his resume and they just didn’t approve of him.”

Lancaster Mayor Rick Gray responded to the claim. “The Chief of Police called to my attention the criminal background of the individual that was going to be performing. I spoke with the Convention Center and just asked if they knew, which includes current criminal acts,” said Gray. “I checked in with the people at the Convention Center and they said the reason the show isn’t going on is that the promoter didn’t honor the terms of the contract in the way of deposits and what not.”

“It’s between him and the Convention Center. Certainly I didn’t say cancel the concert and the concert wasn’t cancelled because of anything I said,” said Gray.

Bently said he will still try to work with the convention center in the future. “I hope I didn’t burn any bridges. I was initially doing this for Lancaster. So hopefully when this is all said and done I will bring in another artist that is maybe not such a liability,” said Bently.

The show will still go on, but it has moved to York County. It will be held this Saturday at The Belmont in North York. Tickets are $25.00 in advance and $45.00 at the door.

There is more information about the DMX concert on the promoters website Loud Nation Wildlife
