When Jay Z hits the stage at Save Mart Center on Tuesday night, it may be Fresno’s biggest show of the year. The Brooklyn rapper sold close to 10,000 tickets when he played here in 2009, and it can be argued he’s more popular than ever.
He’s coming off the release of “Magna Carta Holy Grail” (which debuted at No. 1 in July) and a mega-successful summer tour co-headlining with pop music icon/actor Justin Timberlake.
But this is about more than tickets or albums sold.
He has 17 Grammy Awards and is consistently ranked as one of the greatest rappers of all time. But he’s also a savvy entrepreneur and a pop-culture phenomenon, as likely to be seen in Forbes Magazine as People. He’s the kind of guy who can grab headlines for starting a sports agency, or deciding to go vegan (which happened this week). This all puts him on another tier of performers among the likes of Madonna, The Rolling Stones, or, dare we say, Justin Bieber.
